Although we each call our unique space ‘home’, we are all linked by our shared relationship with our planet. It’s our privilege to preserve it for generations to come, and we’ve gathered a list of small, easy steps we can all take to make a big difference together.
Reduce Plastic Pollution, One Straw At A Time!
Since its invention in 1907, our use of plastics continues to increase. The Earth Day Network (earthday.org) has made the issue of plastic pollution its primary focus this year. We can see the problem easily in the litter on our city streets, but nowhere is this issue felt more strongly than in our oceans. The Pacific Ocean Garbage Vortex, made up of primarily plastic particles, is estimated to be between the size of Texas and Russia. It is also estimated that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish, if our consumption continues at its current pace.
What can we do? We can start by making sure that the plastic we do use ends up in recycling centers, instead of the trash. We can pick up litter that we see and dispose of it in a recycling container. Let’s keep bringing our own reusable bags to the supermarket. Finally, we can reduce our plastic consumption by drinking beverages in reusable bottles, and skipping the disposable straw in restaurants.
Lyrid Meteor Shower, April 14-30
What better way to celebrate Earth than to enjoy a ‘star-studded’ show in our skies? One of the oldest cosmic viewing experiences in our history, the Lyrid Meteor Shower is already underway. The best time to view it is the early morning hours of Earth Day, between 2-6AM. These meteors tend to be fast and bright, and while it can be unpredictable, we could see as many as 100 an hour if we are lucky!

What You Need to Make Your Soap Pump:
Mason Jar
Jar lid
Pretty paper to jazz up your jar. Cut it to fit and cover your tin lid.
A pump from an old dispenser. I took mine off of a lotion jar from the grocery store. I think you can also buy these at craft stores. But any old soap dispenser will do.
Glue gun.
How to Make Your Soap Pump:
Drill a hole in the centre of your lid, so that it is big enough to fit the bottom portion of your pump.
Assemble.
I used the glue gun on the bottom of the lid, to make a seal between the soap pump and the jar lid. This will also help to prevent the lid from rusting.
